FLEx (FieldWorks Language Explorer)

FieldWorks consists of software tools that help you manage linguistic and cultural data. FieldWorks supports tasks ranging from the initial entry of collected data through to the preparation of data for publication, including:

  • dictionary development
  • interlinearization of texts
  • cultural records
  • bulk editing of many fields
  • morphological analysis

Keyman Desktop - Multilingual Virtual Keyboard

Keyman Desktop is a multilingual virtual keyboard application.  It enables a user to type in any of over 600 languages in Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS, and Linux. Designed with the user in mind, it is the market-leading keyboard mapping solution. Well-supported across many operating systems,  it brings a simple solution to the complexity of typing in a range of languages and scripts that are either unsupported or only partly supported by the operating system.

Toolbox

Toolbox is a data management and analysis tool for field linguists. It is primarily aimed at editing lexical data, and for parsing and interlinearizing text, but it can be used to manage virtually any kind of data.

If you have experience with the Field Linguist's Shoebox, you can think of Toolbox as an enhanced version of Shoebox with a new name. It is fully compatible with Shoebox. You can install Toolbox and use it just as you used Shoebox, with virtually no difference. Because Toolbox is an enhanced version of Shoebox, it is sometimes referred to as Shoebox/Toolbox.

Scripture App Builder

Scripture App Builder is a tool for taking formatted text like USFM files from Paratext and making them into an Android app that will display the text on an Android phone or tablet. If audio files exist, they can be built into the app, so that as the audio plays, the corresponding words in the text are highlighted. If you use HearThis to record the audio for your Paratext project, incorporating the two together in an app is quite straightforward (HearThis automatically stores the timing information needed for the text-audio synchronization).

The resulting Android app can be copied...

XLingPaper

XLingPaper is a way to author and archive linguistic papers or books using XML. Many of us prefer writing XLingPaper files with the XMLmind XML Editor. It makes writing XML much easier than other XML-oriented editors we've used.

This project contains not only the XLingPaper files, but also the configuration files for using XLingPaper with the XMLmind XML Editor.

Bloom

Learning to read takes books. Learning to read well, and developing a love of reading, takes lots of books.  Books at all different skill levels. But how are low-literacy language communities ever to get all those books in their language?  They can do it with Bloom.

Bloom uses collections of "shell books" that come with multiple source languages. Read the ones you understand, type in a translation in your language, and you're done!

FieldWorks Data Notebook

In the FieldWorks suite of applications, Data Notebook was the first major product released, and it's probably the most polished. DN and FLEx have a similar look and feel, but DN is simpler (fewer "moving parts").

As you experience various cultural events, you may want to jot down some notes on paper, but even so you should type up the event as soon as possible so that when you or someone else reads it much later, it will make sense. You should probably also mark the event write-up in DN with metadata and all relevant OCM codes before considering the write-up to be complete.

Lexique Pro

Lexique Pro provides a rich browsing experience for lexicons store in an SFM format such as MDF. No import is required (though there is some initial configuration). It also supports the new XML standard, LIFT (Lexicon Interchange FormaT). Lexique provides three kinds of output for distributing your dictionary: print, interactive CD, and website. See www.lexiquepro.com !

LibreOffice Linguistic Tools

This add-on inserts linguistic examples into LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice documents.  It reads XML files from FieldWorks and Toolbox.

Other features include:

  • Data Conversion using SIL Converters.
  • Manage the list of grammatical abbreviations in a document.
  • Practice learning different scripts by typing.

Adapt It

Adapt It is a computer program that helps translate texts between related languages (a process called adaptation). Using Adapt It, translators have been able to dramatically reduce the total time spent in their translation projects.
