Note: On some computers, when you start PrimerPrep it takes a little while to open the window. So when you first start the program, please be patient!

Note: For a few days, AVG was reporting a Trojan Horse virus in PrimerPrep. That false positive has been fixed, so if you still see this problem, please update your AVG definitions.

Google Input Tools

This utility is available either as a download for Windows (that integrates languages into the Windows language bar), or as a plugin for the Chrome browser. Permits typing in a variety of scripts, both Roman and non-Roman, and includes a visual keyboard and a predictive text toolbar, where it suggests words based on keys you have pressed. By my count, it looks like over 70 languages are supported, including Korean, Japanese, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Hindi, Punjabi, Malayalam, Arabic, Persia and others (this is not a complete list of all the non-Roman scripts).

SynPhony

Average: 4 (1 vote)

SynPhony is a browser-based program that facilitates the rapid production of literacy materials in alphabetically written languages. Being browser-based means it can be accessed from a web server OR your personal hard drive. In both cases it will display in your browser. SynPhony allows the computer to dynamically find language material that corresponds to the reading level of any particular stage in a literacy curriculum. It is unicode aware and can handle many different writing systems, including syllabic scripts. To date SynPhony has successfully been implemented in 12 different scripts (Arabic, Bengali, Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Ethiopic, Hebrew, Kannada, Latin, Tamil, Telegu, and Tibetan) and almost 2 dozen languages.

SIL Unicode fonts

No votes yet

A basic need to do any language work on the computer is a font that will display the needed characters. Fonts that come with your operating system may have a certain number of characters already, but the SIL fonts frequently have a wider variety of characters.

The Latin/Cyrillic fonts differ mostly in the typeface. Charis, Doulos and Gentium are serif fonts. Andika is a sans-serif typeface designed for new readers with easily distinguished letter forms.
