Installation Instructions

Installation Steps (FLExTrans now requires FLEx 9 or higher and 64-bit Windows is assumed):

  1. Install the Windows Subsystem for Linux following these instructions. Choose version 1 (not version 2). The basic steps are:
    1. Enable the Windows Subsystem for Linux feature. This requires a restart of your system.
    2. Install a Linux Distribution (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is recommended). This will require creating an admin user and password for Linux. Leave the terminal window open for the next command. If you closed it run the Ubuntu program to get a terminal window again.
  2. Install the Apertium tools with these steps (use the password created above if prompted):
    1. In the Ubuntu terminal, type: curl -sS https://apertium.projectjj.com/apt/install-release.sh | sudo bash (you can copy this text and then right-click in the bash window to paste it)
    2. Type: sudo apt-get -f install apertium-all-dev Note: you will have to type Y when prompted to continue.
  3. Download the installer and run it. Follow the steps in the install wizard including:
    1. Install Python when given the option. (Remember to check the Add to Path checkbox)
    2. Install Git for Windows accepting all the default options. (This is needed for installing FLExTools which FLExTrans runs in)
    3. Install XML Mind. (This is an XML editor used to edit FLExTrans transfer rules and more)
  4. At the moment you need restart your computer and run the installer again. (Select no for Python, Git, and XML Mind)
  5. The installation is finished. You now have a FLExTools2.0 folder under Documents. You may move this folder wherever you like.
  6. Try a test translation!
    1. Restore the two sample FLEx projects, German-FLExTrans-Sample and Swedish-FLExTrans-Sample which are located in the Sample Projects folder under the FLExTools2.0 folder. You can restore them by double-clicking on them.
    2. Close both sample FLEx projects.
    3. Start FlexTools by double-clicking on FlexTools.vbs in the FLExTools2.0 folder (You will get a Security Warning box that comes up. Untick the box that says "Always ask before opening this file" and click Open.)
    4. Click Choose Project
    5. Double-click German-FLExTrans-Sample
    6. Click on the Run All (Modify) button to run all the FLExTrans modules.
