Installation Instructions

Installation Steps (FLExTrans now requires FLEx 9 or higher and 64-bit Windows is assumed):

  1. FLExTrans is a Windows tool that runs on a platform called FlexTools. FlexTools requires Python for Windows which must be installed separately.
    1. Download for 64-bit Windows
    2. Double-click the file to run the install.
    3. IMPORTANT: Make sure you check Add Python 3.7 to Path
  2. Install git for Windows (needed for installing some library dependencies)
  3. Unzip the FLExTools20WithFLExTrans.zip file somewhere on your harddrive.
  4. Install FlexTools Libraries by doing the following:
    1. Open a command prompt (DOS shell)
    2. cd to the folder where you unzipped the folder above.
    3. Type pip install -r requirements.txt or (OR python -m pip install -r requirements.txt)
  5. Install the Windows Subsystem for Linux following these instructions. The basic steps are:
    1. Enable the Windows Subsystem for Linux feature. This requires a restart of your system.
    2. Install a Linux Distribution (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is recommended). This will require creating an admin user and password for Linux.
  6. Install the Apertium system and Linux Python in the Linux subsystem: (these instructions come from the Apertium installation page
    1. Open a Bash window
      1. Press the Windows key, type "bash"
      2. Don't choose Git Bash, choose bash (by itself)
    2. Type sudo bash and enter the Linux admin password created above.
    3. Type: curl -sS https://apertium.projectjj.com/apt/install-release.sh | sudo bash (you can copy this text and then right-click in the bash window to paste it)
    4. Type: sudo apt-get -f install apertium-all-dev
    5. Install Python for Linux for use with Windows Subsystem for Linux:
      1. In the Bash window, type the following: sudo apt-get install python
      2. Follow the prompts
  7. Try a test translation!
    1. Restore the two sample FLEx projects, German-FLExTrans-Sample and Swedish-FLExTrans-Sample which are located in the Sample Projects folder under the FLExTools2.0 folder. You can restore them by double-clicking on them.
    2. Close both sample FLEx projects.
    3. Start FlexTools by double-clicking on FlexTools.vbs in the FLExTools2.0 folder (You will get a Security Warning box that comes up. Untick the box that says "Always ask before opening this file" and click Open.)
    4. Click Choose Project
    5. Double-click German-FLExTrans-Sample
    6. Click on the Run All (Modify) button to run all the FLExTrans modules.
    7. The German sentence 'Ich liebe dich.' (I love you.) will get translated to the Swedish 'Jag älskar dig.'
    8. Open the Swedish-FLExTrans-Sample FLEx project and refresh the list of texts. You should see Text1 appear with the Swedish translation in it.
