Understanding and Applying Adult Education principles
Being aware of adult learning principles with special sensitivity to cultural differences increases learners' engagement with the material and, therefore, enhances transfer of knowledge.
Helping adults learn collaboratively is a crucial skill for a consultant. A learner-centred approach enables consultants to serve well by assessing basic training needs and designing appropriate learning events to address those needs.

The following activities have been identified to achieve comptency in Adult Education in levels from Learner to Expert.
Explore 2-3 websites and read 2-3 articles that describe the principles of Adult Education.
Reflect on your own learning experiences and describe how those influenced you.
Read 2-3 articles about cultural preferences in teaching and learning. Discuss with your mentor how these articles can be applied in your context.
Participate at a learning event with your mentor. Observe how adult learning principles are applied. Debrief with your mentor after the learning event..
Read 3 articles or a book on Adult Education. Discuss the implications of what you have learnt from this reading with your mentor.
Discuss with your mentor how Adult Education principles can be applied in your context (work and cultural environment).
Ask your colleagues in your local context about their experiences at school. Find out more about their experiences in formal and non-formal educational settings. Discuss with your mentor how your cultural background and expectations in terms of teaching and learning might be different from those you work with or you teach and what impact that might have on your teaching.
Discuss with your mentor the needs of participants before you help teach a workshop. Talk about different ways that can be useful to assess the needs.
Design a module based on Adult Education principles that is part of a workshop. Ask your mentor for feedback. Choose an area to improve on.
