Rationale: 

Language Documentation is a wide field focused on collecting a corpus of linguistic material in many media. Through time-aligned transcription, the corpus becomes even richer. A Language Technologist choosing this competency will need to facilitate appropriate quality of recording, as well as guiding users through the tools used in the transcription process. Users will also need assistance preparing appropriate metadata for archiving and sharing.

Assessment Criteria: 

Has mastered tools to document living and endangered languages. Can identify quality audio and video recordings, teach best practices , and edit or clean up these files.

Growth Activities

The following activities have been identified to achieve comptency in Language Documentation in levels from Learner to Expert.

Learner: 

Participate in a language documentation collection or course. Collect your own data and recordings.

Practitioner: 

Use a language documentation tool in a language documentation collection to analyze, tag, transcribe, and archive data.

Trainer: 

Teach others to use a language documentation tool.

Expert: 

Research the latest developments in language documentation,
