COG

Cog is a tool for comparing languages using lexicostatistics and comparative linguistics techniques. It automates the process of comparing word lists from different language varieties. This is an alpha test version, so not ready for full use;.

The webpage includes a demonstration video on the program.

AMPLE

SUMMARY:  A morphological parser for linguistic exploration

DETAILS:  When given the necessary information about the morphology of a language, AMPLE will analyze each word in a text and break it into morphemes. AMPLE is oriented to the "item and arrangement" approach to the description of morphological phenomena. It can handle nonconcatenative phenomena only indirectly. AMPLE works together with STAMP (OPAC 15) for Computer-Assisted Related Language Adaptation (CARLA). It can also be used in conjunction with ITF (OPAC 17) for publishing glossed texts in interlinear form.

PalmSurv

PalmSurv will take the place of paper and pen in word list elicitation by enabling a surveyor to transcribe word lists directly onto his/her PalmOS handheld computer. Different views of the data allow the surveyor to visually compare word lists and scroll through forms elicited in the language being researched. The word list data can then be transferred to a desktop computer via HotSync..

Wordcorr

The Wordcorr Idea. Wordcorr is a tool for comparing speech varieties. It can handle a large number of matching word lists -- how many depends on your operating system, screen size, and font choices. It makes the full International Phonetic Alphabet available to you, as well as other notations.

Once the raw data are organized, Wordcorr

WordSurv

A linguistics computer program designed to aid in the collection and analysis of word lists, assisting in the entry and maintenance of word lists and cognate decisions, the computation of lexicostatistic and phonostatistic measures of similarity, and the output of data and results in various formats.

Audacity

An audio editor that runs on all major platforms. It is oriented more toward music than phonetics and has only limited analysis tools. However, it can do noise reduction and has some useful editing tools, including the ability to modify individual samples and to change the amplitude envelope.

FLEx (FieldWorks Language Explorer)

FieldWorks consists of software tools that help you manage linguistic and cultural data. FieldWorks supports tasks ranging from the initial entry of collected data through to the preparation of data for publication, including:

  • dictionary development
  • interlinearization of texts
  • cultural records
  • bulk editing of many fields
  • morphological analysis

Speech Analyzer

Speech Analyzer is a computer program for recording  and acoustic analysis of speech sounds. You can use it to do the following tasks:

  • Perform fundamental frequency, spectrographic and spectral analysis, and duration measurements.
  • Add phonemic, orthographic, tone, and gloss transcriptions to phonetic transcriptions in an interlinear format.
  • Perform ethnomusicological analysis of music recordings.
  • Use slowed playback, repeat loops and overlays to assist with perception and mimicry of sounds for language learning.
