Knowledge of tools for doing phonetic analysis
Rationale:
This competency covers the usage and training of users to use the current phonetic tools to determine the sound system of a language.
Assessment Criteria:
Is able to use the tools for doing phonetic analysis and is able to consult others in their use
Growth Activities
The following activities have been identified to achieve comptency in Phonetic Tools in levels from Learner to Expert.
Has Knowledge:
Learn about the phonetic alphabet (IPA) and the sounds the symbols represent.
Learn to use a phonetic analysis tool (i.e. Speech Analyzer) to open audio files.
With Assistance:
Learn to use a tool for teaching IPA sounds.
Work with a linguist to learn to configure views in a phonology tool so that they can identify and annotate segments and "interesting" features.
Independent:
Work with a linguist to learn to use an IPA virtual keyboard to access various characters and diacritics.
Work with a linguist to learn to visually interpret audio files in a phonetic analysis tool.
Proficient:
Use the phonetic alphabet to describe sounds in a language.
Prepare and teach phonetics tools module as part of a training event
Expert:
Write a phone inventory of a language.
Train someone to teach a phonetic tools module
