As noted in a previous post, large documents could take a long time to load with version 7.2 (and 7.3) of the XMLmind XML Editor. There is good news: the recently released version 7.4 of the XMLmind XML Editor has greatly improved the load time for large documents. While version 7.3 took 13:30 minutes to load a large document, version 7.4 takes only about 20 seconds.

First, XLingPaper has a new website at http://software.sil.org/xlingpaper. Feel free to check it out. We will keep the old website up for at least another couple of months. Second, some have noticed that XMLmind has a new version (7+) that allows for a Personal Edition License again. It turns out that this new version also handles the newer high density computer screens well while the version we have been using (5.3) does not do so. We have created a... read more

Beginning with version 7 of the XMLmind XML Editor (aka XXE), XMLmind is offering their Personal Use License again (they ceased doing so after version 5.3). While this is good news, there are some definite changes and incompatibilities between version 5.3 and the current version (7.3). Here are the main advantages that XXE 7.3 has over XXE 5.3: XXE 7.3 works well with screens using HDPI technology. The older XXE 5.3, on the other hand, will appear very tiny on these newer screens and may... read more
@RH_IQ_Keyboard no, Keyman is not designed to use an alternate dll. Even Keyman's European layout support would not do what you are asking.
@RH_IQ_Keyboard You wouldn't be able to combine the two: Keyman uses kbdus.dll for the base system layout.
@RH_IQ_Keyboard At this time, no you cannot remap the Windows key and the Kana, Roya and Loya keys are not explicitly supported.

In response to User feedback, nearly all restrictions have been removed from the characters allowed in kin terms and in names. All characters in all UTF character sets are now legal, including hyphens, embedded blanks, numbers, and special characters. Only double-quotes and commas are prohibited in the body of a kin term; numbers and asterisks may not be the first character of a kin term.

As requested by field workers, SILKin now can handle adoption, clans, and other non-genealogical relationships. To make this as versatile as possible, we have added User Defined Properties (UDPs) that can represent an adoptive relationship, clan membership, or anything else the User can define. This feature will be used primarily for adoptions and clans, but could be used to record locations, skills, shared gardens or resources, dining arrangements, wealth, etc. Adoption-type... read more

Users may now create as many charts as they want for a single Context. There is still only one database of people and families, but the population can be spread over any number of charts. This keeps chart size more manageable and allows the User to group people any way they like. When a person on one chart marries someone on another chart, the User may create a link to that person. For example: Assume that the Smith family appears on Chart A and the Jones family appears on Chart B. If... read more

A snap-to-grid option has been added to chart drawing. It is activated by default. When the User creates a new person or family on a Family Tree chart, their symbol “snaps” to the nearest empty square on an invisible grid. This keeps charts neater and well-spaced. The size of the grid can be adjusted in “Edit Prefs.”

Recently, there have been two cases reported where a font was not displaying correctly in the XMLmind XML Editor and in the default PDF output. In both cases it was on Windows 7 and in both cases the user had installed a new version of the font in question. It turned out that there were duplicate instances of that font installed. (Why Windows 7 allowed duplicates, I have no idea.) The solution was to get a tool like TypoGraf to see what fonts are truly installed, find the duplicates, delete... read more
